Dear friend,
welcome to the blog of our group "Baltava"! We are a group of historians and craftspeople who are reconstructing ancient clothing, crafts, food, and everyday household objects from the Baltic area in the Late Iron Age (9-12th centuries) and the Middle ages (13-16th centuries). We come from Riga, the capital of Latvia.

Our activities are of a wide scope and are adjusted to the time-frame of the event we are participating:
women's crafts:
spinning, dyeing wool, weaving, tablet-weaving (card-weaving), inkle, sewing, needle-binding, embroidery; making flour, cooking, backing bread.
men's crafts: leather-working, shoe- and purse-making, wood-working.
We also sing ancient Latvian folksongs, dance Latvian and medieval dances, as well as love travelling to archaeological and other cultural-heritage sites and visiting museums.
We take part in medieval festivals and markets in Latvia and abroad and demonstrate all our crafts to the public, explain the ancient craft techniques and teach crafts to those who are interested. If You would like to co-operate with us, e.g. invite us to participate in an event You are organising or order hand-made ancient or medieval clothing or footwear, please contact us at our e-mail: tavabaltava (@) inbox.lv (remove spaces and brackets) or call us at +371 26527431 (group leader Ieva Pigozne).
We all speak Latvian, English, and Russian, some speak also other languages, e.g. Norwegian, and German.
